Some surgery faculty members became aware of remarkable poverty among medical students at the University of Michigan. Despite robust financial aid and institutional resources, there remains periods of profound funding gaps. This resulted in food insecurity, housing insecurity, and other challenges that jeopardize successful professional development. The Shield Fund began to help these students fill these funding gaps.
